From a process perspective, the most important column internal is the liquid distributor. Correct distribution of liquid over a packed bed or structured packing is achieved by appropriate liquid distributors. To ensure dense mass transfer between phases, it is important to distribute the liquid flow evenly throughout the column area. Liquid distributors are required at all points in the column where external liquid streams are introduced. In addition to providing a uniform liquid distribution pattern to the top of the packed bed, the distributor must also provide sufficient gas passage area to avoid high pressure drop or liquid entrainment. Liquid distributors should have high turndown ratios and be resistant to scaling.
